The UK has announced a ban on single-use wet wipes containing plastic, making headlines around the world.
While Australia hasn't introduced a similar ban, it has sparked an important conversation about the products many of us use every day.
So what's actually being banned?
Not all wet wipes.
The ban specifically targets single-use wipes that contain plastic fibres, which are commonly used to add strength to disposable wipes.
Plastic-free disposable wipes can still be sold, and reusable cloth wipes are completely unaffected.
Why are plastic wipes being banned?
Millions of disposable wipes are flushed or thrown away every year.
Unlike toilet paper, wipes don't break down quickly. They contribute to blocked sewer systems, litter waterways and leave behind tiny plastic fibres known as microplastics.
The UK Government hopes the ban will reduce pollution and encourage more sustainable alternatives.
What does this mean for Australian families?
Nothing... yet.
But many Australian parents are already choosing reusable wipes—not because they have to, but because they simply work well.
