Mukti Organic Prefolds - A Very Special Project

‘Mukti’ (pronounced 'mook-ti') in the Marathi language of India means freedom, liberation and salvation.

For 120 years, Mukti Mission has been providing homes and care for women and children in India who have been abused, neglected, abandoned or oppressed. Started by Pandita Ramabai, one of India's most influential reformers and a woman passionately concerned with the freedom and welfare of her countrywomen, Mukti Mission today continues to provide hope and a future for hundreds of destitute women and children irrespective of their background.

Mukti provides a loving community to many abused, disabled, and marginalised women. Mukti Australia approached us some time ago about possible collaboration on a project specifically focused for these women, not only to assist Mukti with the support of these women, but to also provide them with independence and the sense of accomplishment that comes from having meaningful work.

Thus the Mukti Organic Prefold Nappy was born. Mukti sourced the best organic Indian cotton fabric available, we provided the template for the prefolds, an overlocker was donated and training was provided. And now, Mukti Organic Prefold Nappies are being sewn, providing skills, opportunities, fair conditions, and dignity to marginalised women, and we have some of the loveliest, hand made, ethically produced organic cotton prefolds available at Darlings Downunder!

These pictures show Shanti cutting the fabric, Lavshmi on the overlocker and Savita doing the top stitching.
